16 Days of Activism: Central Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Unit

Published

Central Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Unit (CAAFLU) is one of 16 specialist Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services (FVPLS) in the country. Today, we shine a light on their crucial work as part of our 16 Days of Activism campaign.

An Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO), CAAFLU provides culturally appropriate, holistic, trauma-informed legal and case-management support services to Aboriginal people, predominantly women, experiencing domestic, family and/or sexual violence (DFSV).

Aboriginal women in the Northern Territory experience some of the highest rates of DFSV in the world. As the only organisation in Central Australia and the Barkly dedicated to assisting Aboriginal victim-survivors of DFSV, CAAFLU plays an essential role in reducing the unacceptably high rates of DFSV in the Territory. In addition to legal advice and casework, CAAFLU delivers community-led early intervention and prevention programs, community legal education, and policy and law reform work.

Watch lawyer, Jean Saker, talk about CAAFLU’s Selfcare and Sistahood early intervention program and about how everyone is responsible for ending DFSV.
