16 Days of Activism: North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service
Today, on International Human Rights Day, we bring our 16 Days of Activism to a close by showcasing the important work of North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Services (NAAFLS).
One of 16 specialist Family Violence Prevention Legal Services (FVPLS), NAAFLS provides support, education and legal representation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in matters relating to domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV). Like other FVPLS, NAAFLS provides a holistic service delivery model to address the interconnected factors that cause DFSV. In addition to legal services, NAAFLS offers non-legal supports, such as case workers, court support, safety planning, assistance with housing applications, and referrals to other service providers.
NAAFLS also engages in community legal education, as well as policy and advocacy work. The organisation specialises in delivering services to people living in remote communities in the Top End, East Arnhem and Big River regions, and operates through the bush court system.
Watch Rachael Hill, Senior Partnership and Advocacy Officer at NAAFLS, discuss the importance of prevention and intervention through education and how we must all take responsibility for calling out DFSV.
