16 Days of Activism: Top End Women’s Legal Service
Today, we continue our 16 Days of Activism campaign by showcasing the important work of Top End Women’s Legal Service (TEWLS).
TEWLS is a not-for-profit, specialist women’s legal service focused on advancing the rights of women and non-binary persons. Located in Darwin, they support women across the Top End of the Northern Territory to access integrated, trauma-informed, and culturally secure free legal and support services.
TEWLS work extends beyond the courtroom to vital community education sessions that help raise awareness about domestic, family and sexual violence and where people can go to get help. TEWLS is also committed to meaningful engagement on law reform and about legal issues that impact women’s lives. TEWLS provides submissions and comments on legislative and policy changes, with a particular focus on women’s experience of domestic, family and sexual violence and access to justice.
Watch Mehak Lopez, a lawyer at TEWLS, share her thoughts about how we need to make sure women and non-binary people’s voices are heard so that the national crisis of domestic, family and sexual violence can be addressed.
