New NT strategy targets early help and culturally safe services to end homelessness

Today we launched the new Northern Territory Homelessness Strategy 2025–2030 - a plan built with and for Territorians to help end homelessness across our communities.

This strategy reflects the voices of people with lived experience, Aboriginal leaders, frontline services and communities across the NT who shared their stories, knowledge and ideas with us. We are grateful to everyone who contributed - your insights have shaped the way forward.

Homelessness in the Northern Territory is complex. It includes people sleeping rough, living in overcrowded homes, or moving from place to place with no stable accommodation. It affects individuals, families, and whole communities - and most of those experiencing homelessness in the NT are Aboriginal people and young people.

The strategy focuses on:

  • helping people earlier so they can stay housed
  • supporting people with culturally safe, person-centred services
  • strengthening the homelessness system so it works better for everyone.

It also introduces regional plans tailored to local needs, a stronger role for Aboriginal community controlled organisations, and better coordination across services and government.

We know real change only happens when we work together and that’s what this strategy is all about. It’s part of our broader commitment to reduce crime, rebuild the economy and restore our lifestyle by making sure more people have a safe and stable place to live.

Together, we can reduce homelessness and build a fairer, stronger Northern Territory for everyone.
